Do you have lots of writing that you’ve accumulated over time? Are you finding it hard to organize your writing with intention into effective content? If so, this blog is for you. I’ve outlined a process that will temporarily take you away from your computer to clearly analyze and organize hard copies of your existing content around your key intentions. You’ll then return to your screen with a clearer sense of where your content should go and how to focus it.
What you’ll need:
Notecards or sticky notes.
A writing utensil.
Printouts of previous content that is most relevant to your intended message.
A pair of scissors.
Have a computer and a printer nearby to print additional content if needed.
4 Steps for Organizing Your Content
1. Write out 3-5 intention statements about your desired message on your notecards or sticky notes.
To create your intention statements, adapt the following prompt so it feels natural to you. Don’t omit any part of the prompt: I intend to write about [main idea], so that [specific audience] can [actionable benefits].
For example: I intend to write about how to attract an authentic and loving relationship, so that single, spiritually-driven people can approach dating from a sense of alignment with their true selves.
You may need to give yourself some time (from a few minutes to up to an hour or more) to write freely about your overall message before clear intention statements surface.
2. When you’ve written up to 5 intention statements, line them up on a flat surface.
Take a few moments to reflect on the overall message you want to convey with your writing. If you still need a stronger grasp on what that message is, continue to freewrite on your message, discuss with someone you trust, or, ideally, both.
Then, review your intention statements. Revise or replace them as needed so that they're in line with your message.
3. Arrange printouts of your most relevant content beneath the intention statements that best fit each piece of writing.
There may be parts of each piece that fit more than one statement, so feel free to cut out those parts with a pair of scissors so you can place them under the right one.
You may need to repeat Step 2 again to define the "why" for each piece of content. Don't worry about revising your previous content to match your message at this point. Simply focus on putting your writings in the right place.
